What did I just read?

Have you ever had trouble remembering what you just read?  Well, sometimes children really struggle with this skill.  Here are a few tips to help children remember what they read:

1. Preview the book- look through the pages of the book and try to guess or predict what might happen.  Now talk together about how it relates to you or some you know.  For example, if the story has to do with a farm then maybe you can talk about how you grew up on a farm or you know someone who lives on a farm.

2.  Questions- take short breaks and ask your child questions about the story.  This helps them to retain what they have read and it helps you to know if they are paying attention while they are reading.

3.  Recite-  after your child is done reading talk about the story and ask him/her if they liked the book, their favorite part of the story or have them put the story back in order (sequencing).

Comprehension is a very important part of reading which will be used for the rest of their lives!

Happy reading,
